Put It Down
What if the reason the thing you're working so hard on isn't working out is that it's not meant to? What if you're holding on to something that has run its course, or it's simply time to move on? What if there's something better for you on the other side, but you can't see it because you're in your own way?
Sometimes when things aren't going well, it's because you're getting in your own way. Ask yourself: "Have I truly put in the hard work and time on this?" In today's world, instant gratification is unfortunately a reality. I know 3–4 years can seem like a long time, but truly, that's nothing. No matter what you're striving for, greatness takes time. You need to understand that 100%.
I always do a "life inventory" around my birthday in the fall. Some do this at the beginning of the year. There's no right or wrong time—whatever works best for you. I like to reflect on what's working, what's not, and things I can do to get closer to my goal.
Now, if you've been giving it your all for 8–10+ years, then it may be time to have a different conversation.
It might be gut check time. Ask yourself these questions and be honest with yourself. Being dishonest with yourself only does more harm.
How long have I been at this, and have I truly been giving it my all? (Please keep in mind, especially if building a business, it could take longer than 10 years. Every situation is unique.)
Have I tried different things? What were those results?
Do I still have a passion for this? Do I still love this?
Is my passion dying?
Am I tired?
Have I pushed myself so hard for too long to the point that I've reached burnout?
Has there been something else on my mind that I'd like to try?
Am I willing to keep pushing on?
Has this season of my life come to an end?
Do I need to take a step back and be still?
Is it time to put it down and move on to something else?
Should this be a passion and not a business? Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sounds like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
I have learned that we have seasons for a reason, and it’s important to honor the season you are in.
